DEBT COLLECTION LETTERS Debt collection letters can be threatening, or misrepresent what powers the creditors actually have. Such letters often breach the Office of Fair Trading debt collection guidance, and it is often reported that people find them very distressing. In an attempt the stamp out poor practices the debt collectors trade association, the Credit Service Association (CSA), has published guidance on the use, form and content of debt collection letters. This guidance was produced in association with the OFT and sets out how debt collection letters can comply with the OFT debt collection guidance. The guidance can be found on the OFT website: [ www.oft.gov.uk/ ] If anyone has a debt collection letter that doesn’t comply with the letter and spirit of the guidance, please report the matter to the Credit Service Association [ www.csa-uk.com) ], the OFT or your local Citizens Advice Bureau.
