NHS Dentistry
The quickest and easiest way to find an NHS Dentist in your area is to phone the
Dental Helpline. Telephone: 0845 271 2040
* Dentists should not assess patients prior to accepting them for treatment.
The assessment should be part of the course of treatment.
* The dentist will decide and agree with the patient what treatment is needed, then put together
and agree a treatment plan. Patients are then on that dentist’s patient list for the duration of
that course of treatment only. However, they can go back to the same dentist in future if they
wish and if that dentist is then accepting NHS patients.
Can I mix private and NHS treatment?
Yes. Everything you may need to keep your mouth healthy can be provided under the NHS.
However, you can choose to have some of your treatment (e.g. cosmetic treatment) privately.
Can the dentist charge me if I miss an appointment?
If you are an NHS patient in England and Wales, your dentist cannot charge you for a missed
appointment.
Should the dentist give me an estimate?
NHS dentists should give you a written estimate for any extensive course of treatment, or whenever you ask for one.
