INSURANCE FOR VEHICLES
KEPT OFF PUBLIC ROADS
From 4 February, it will be an offence to keep a vehicle off a public road without insurance.
However, a vehicle will not need to be insured in any of the following circumstances:
· It has a valid Statutory Off Road Notice (SORN)
· It has been kept off a public road since before 1 February 1998
· It has been scrapped, stolen or exported and proper notification has been made
If a vehicle appears to be uninsured, the registered keeper will receive a letter telling them that
they are uninsured and warning them either to insure their vehicle or to ensure that their insurance
company has correctly entered the correct insurance policy details on the Motor Insurers’ Bureau
database (MID).
If anyone fails to insure their vehicle within a specified time, they could face:
· A fixed penalty fine of £100 (reduced to £50 if paid early)
· Having the vehicle clamped, seized and destroyed
· Being taken to court
More information about what to do as a vehicle keeper, how the check the MID and how to apply for
a SORN is available on the DirectGov website at www.direct.gov.uk
